Overcoming Reading Difficulties- Dr. Kilpatrick

MASP is hosting two full-day online Professional Development sessions focused on reading development, assessment, and interventions. David A. Kilpatrick, PhD, is a professor of psychology for the State University of New York College at Cortland. He is a New York State certified school psychologist with 28 years of experience in schools. He has been teaching courses in learning disabilities and educational psychology since 1994. David is a reading researcher and the author of two books on reading, Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties, and Equipped for Reading Success, and is a co-editor of a third, Reading Development and Difficulties: Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice.

Session 1- March 4th: “Recent Advances in Understanding Word-Level Reading Problems: Implications for Instruction and Intervention”
The first session will focus on how children learn to read words and why some children struggle. Understanding the nature of word-level reading development and word-level reading problems will guide both instruction and intervention. Practical applications and effective strategies for supporting reading skill development will be presented. This session is recommended for all who work with students in reading development, including teachers for students in K-4 and those who work with students with reading delays such as student services teachers and school clinicians.

Session 2- March 11th: “Intervention-Oriented Assessment in Reading”
The second session (March 11th) will build on the previous one with the goals of (1) designing more educationally relevant assessments and (2) guiding intervention recommendations. Both general and specific assessment issues related to scientifically-informed evaluations will be presented. Specific commercially available tests will be discussed, many of which most practitioners already have. Opportunities will be provided for facilitated questions and answers from participants. David has also offered for participants to bring depersonalized case examples with assessment data to share and discuss during the afternoon. This session is for school psychologists and other clinicians only. The reason for the specification of clinicians for the second day is that there will be an emphasis on specialized psychoeducational assessment tools with qualification levels B and C, requiring Masters- or Doctorate-level training in specialized assessment. The second session would not be appropriate without this training, in part due to the sensitive nature of the test instruments.

The presentation will take place virtually. You will be provided login information a week prior to the event. You will need to provide an email that will be used to provide webcast instructions.
